How to understand ENGLISH GRAMMAR : 'Subject - Verb Agreement' ?
Rules Of Agreement : singular subject + singular verb
plural subject + plural verb
What is singular subject ? he, she, it / Ali, Siti, A cat
What is singular verb ? verb (action) + s/es/ies/ves (e.g : eats, washes, cries, saves)
verb (to do) (e.g does)
verb (to have) (e.g has)
verb (to be) (e.g is , was)
What is plural subject ? we, they or..................special subject : I , you
What is plural verb ? root word of verb (action) (e.g eat, wash, cry, safe) - without s/es/ies/ves
verb (to do) (e.g do)
verb (to have) (e.g have)
verb (to be) (e.g are , were) or ..................... (e.g am)
Example :
singular subject + singular verb = He (singular subject) eats (singular verb) rice every day.
" He eats rice everyday "
plural subject + plural verb = They (plural subject) eat (plural verb) rice every day.
" They eat rice every day "
or
special subject + plural verb = I (special subject) eat (plural verb) rice every day.
" I eat rice every day "
Very important tips to remenber the rules.
singular subject + singular verb
Story: " 1 person goes to the jungle, then meets a snake..... the snake will come nearer and eats
you "
Meaning : 1 person (singular subject) + snake (singular verb)....because letter 'S' from 'snake' means
(s,es,ies,ves) added behind the verbs.
Example : The baby cries loudly
plural subject + plural verb
Story: "Many people go to the jungle, then meet a snake..... the snake afraids and goes away "
Meaning : Many people (plural subject) + snake goes away (plural verb)......'goes away' means no
snake / 'S' behind the verbs.
Example : I and my family stay in 5 stars hotel.
But in special case : I & You (although 1 person), not a singular subject because ............
Story: " I & You are SUPER POWER ! , I (Superman) & You (Supergirl). Although Superman
or Supergirl is only 1 person. When he / she goes to the jungle, the snake very very scares
and SUPERPOWER kills it"
Meaning : I / You (special subject) + died snake (plural verb)....without 'S' behind the verbs because
the snake had died.
Example : I sleep early today because I am very tired.
